No. 410

Lodge Morning Star

Lodge Morning Star Temperance No 410 was constituted on 4th February, 1922.

The Lodge is the daughter of Lodge Rising Star of Gosford and was formed to meet the needs of the Brethren of the Woy Woy “Peninsula” area.

In those early days with no roads in or out of the district, no electricity or piped water some early members journeyed over the waterways by small boats.  To assist, our meetings were made to coincide with the phases of the moon, meeting on the Monday on or before the full moon, allowing the trip across the open water to be made safer by the light of that “bright Morning Star” on the way home.

The Lodge being Temperance held its meetings in a small building belonging to the Presbyterian Church adjacent to the original Bay View Hotel. The building was on fairly high piers on a low lying block and the Charter was granted on the proviso that the Outer Guard was to patrol the building at intervals to make sure no intruder was hiding below.

Rehearsal meetings initially were held in the produce store of W Bro Brooker, the furnishings being bales of hay and bags of wheat.  A number of our founding fathers names are recorded on various streets, parks and places of interest in recognition of their work to the Peninsula community.

The Masonic Centre built in 1926 was owned by the Royal Arch Chapter ‘Albert Josephson’ and its furnishings were made and contributed to by the members. Unfortunately, the Masonic Centre at Woy Woy Railway Station was sold, causing Lodge Morning Star to relocate to the Gosford Masonic Centre in 2007, and meets on the 4th Monday of each month at 7.00 pm.  The Installation meeting is on the 3rd Saturday of March.

The Volume of the Sacred Law is near 200 years old, from Scotland in 1873, being the property of Thomas Grieve, a Wesleyan lay preacher.

A good number of its members still reside on the “Peninsula” and where its Charity efforts are so directed.
